Local Option Sales Tax Election information

The City of Marshalltown will be holding a special election on August 1, 2017, to ask the voters of Marshalltown to change how the City can use local option sales tax (LOST).

The City of Marshalltown would like to correct an error in our mailing about the August 1st special election. The ballot language asks the voters to approve 78% of revenue from the existing local option sales tax go to property tax relief and 22% of local option sales tax be designated for any lawful purpose. This will result in a property tax reduction of $.48 per $1,000 of taxable value. We regret this error. Please view the corrected information below.

In an effort to provide more information to the public, Finance Director Diana Steiner and City Administrator Jessica Kinser are holding workshops throughout the community call “Budgeting 101”. This is a great way to learn more about how the City of Marshalltown operates and pays for different things as well as get information about the special election.

Budgeting 101 Schedule:

  • Monday, July 17th, at 7pm at the Fisher Community Center
  • Thursday, July 27th, at 6pm at the Marshalltown Public Library
  • Can’t make a Budgeting 101 workshop? Watch the Budget 101 video
