The Operations Division of the Marshalltown Police Department is the largest division. It has 33 Police officers and two canine officers assigned to it. Officers are assigned in shifts that work patrol 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The officers generally work as single units in squad cars. At times, two officers may be assigned to one car if one officer is in the Field Training Program. We also, at times, have officers assigned to foot patrol and bicycle patrol.
The Operations Division is responsible for patrolling all roadways, alleys, parks, residential, and industrial areas of the City. They receive calls for service from the Communications Center and respond, investigate, take reports, and resolve problems for citizens. Officers on patrol are also responsible for enforcement of City Ordinances, traffic laws, and criminal laws. The police department has over 20,000 contacts annually resulting in over 5,000 reports. The enforcement of traffic laws is at times based on complaints received from the public. Officers also work within specific areas where we have numerous traffic accidents.
