2012 Art

These popular art classes offer something for everyone! There are classes designed for students entering 1st through 8th grade. This program is held in collaboration with the Marshalltown School District. About our instructor: Lauren Williams has an art teaching degree from UNI with emphasis in painting, drawing, ceramics and art history. This is her second year as a teacher in the Marshalltown School District. She has taught art trek and summer/winter art camps for CIAA since 2008. She has done some work for the Linn Creek Arts Festival and does free lance art on the side.

Picture Perfect Primaries

For those entering grades 1-2-3. Perfect Primaries will start with clay to make characters, a bowl made with coils rubbed into a form and a clay pendant. Each student will also create a sand painting, scratch art and found object sculptures! Min 6/Max 16

    Awesome Artists

    For those entering grades 4 & 5. Awesome Artists will use the theme of animals to sculpt and glaze. We will make nature relief prints and use the mirror image of the print in clay to create a bowl or a plate. The class will use the potter’s wheel to make a bowl. In addition, you will have the opportunity to make a sand painting, scratch art and found object sculptures. Min 6/Max 16

    High School Art Preview

    For those entering grades 6-7-8. You will get a preview of high school art classes. You will start with making a relief print and use that plate’s impression for a mug or pot. Next is wheel work: a bowl on the potter’s wheel. You will also create clay room corners. You will have the opportunity to do a sand painting, a scratch art picture and mixed media collage. If there is time, we will make a flip book that was a forerunner of animation. Min 6/Max 16

    2012 Tiny Tot Sports Camp

    The Tiny Tot Sports Camp is designed to teach children 4-6 years old the fundamentals of basketball. Each camp meets 4 times. Min 6/Max 20 per camp.

    2012 Camp Marshalltown-Special Needs Day Program

    This special day camp program is for school age kids in the Marshall County area who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program is funded through Marshall County ARC and United Way. A variety of activities including crafts, games, swimming and field trips are planned. Ages 6-21 (if still in high school.) Each child will receive a t-shirt.

    2012 Summer Blast Day Camps

    For those entering grades 1-6. Come join your friends at the Coliseum from 8:00-5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 4-August 10. Special arrangements can be made for early drop-off. Camp will start and end at the Coliseum, but many off-site activities will take place during the day.

    Led by experienced staff, children will enjoy challenging activities and opportunities, but most of all have FUN! Morning activities will include arts and crafts, cooking, karaoke, recreation and games, library visits, character education, air hockey and foosball, special visits by ISU Extension and free time to play and read.

    The afternoons will be filled with aquatic center swim time or field trips such as bowling. Lunch is provided through the school's summer lunch program when available. Children must bring their lunch when the school lunches are not being served.

    Optional activity (with additional fees): Swimming lessons are offered during weeks 6 and 7. The fee is $47.00 which includes transportation to and from lessons.

    Registration fees: $80.00 per week per child ($70.00 per week per child with an aquatic center season pass). The week of July 2-6 is $64.00($56.00)- no camp July 4th. Early drop-off is $5.00 per week. A minimum of 20 and a maximum of 50 students are set for each week. Each child will receive a t-shirt. Registration must be received by Thursday of the preceding week to avoid late fee.

    2012 Introduction to Golf – Family Style!

    A clinic to introduce the basics of golf is being offered to families. PGA Golf Professionals John Schrempf and Jerry Johnson will be leading this clinic. Children ages 5-12, along with at least one parent, are invited to attend. Equipment will be available to use for those that don’t have their own. Get out and get active!

    2012 Golf Instruction For Kids (Ages 9-13)

    Youth lessons are offered in two sessions. Learn the basic techniques, rules and golf etiquette. Class times are spent on skills as well as playing on a real course! Registration covers all fees including the golf course. Each session consists of 8 classes. Class sizes are limited so early sign up is recommended. Clubs needed: 9, 7, driver, putter. Junior size clubs and left-handed clubs are available to use if needed.

    2012 City Junior Golf Tournament

    This recreational tournament is open to boys and girls 18 years old (not graduating seniors) and under. There are separate boys and girls divisions in the 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18 age brackets. Age divisions 11 and above will play a two-day tournament--August 6th at Elmwood and August 7th at the Legion. The 9 & 10 year old players and the 8 and under will play a one-day tournament at Collison's Par Three on August 8th. The 9 & 10 age group will have separate boys and girls divisions: 8 and under group will be boys and girls combined. Ribbons and trophies will be awarded. Lunch and/or snack for the golfers on Monday and Tuesday. Phone calls will be made to each participant with tee time.

    2012 Drive, Chip & Putt Contest

    This PGA Iowa Section contest is locally sponsored by Parks & Recreation, American Legion Memorial Golf Course and Elmwood Country Club. It is for boys and girls ages 5-17. Local winners have the opportunity to advance to regional and state competitions. Contestants are given 4 drives and 4 chip shots with the best 3 scored. Drives are based on accuracy and length; 40 foot chip shots are given various points; putting is set at 5 & 8 feet with 2 chances at each and points awarded for efforts. Age divisions for both boys and girls. Divisions are (age as of 8/12/12): 5-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, 16-17.

    2012 Sparks (Super Parks And Recreation KidS)!

    If you are too old for Live Wires, then try Sparks! Sparks is designed especially for 6 to 8 year old boys and girls.     2012 Power Tumbling/Trampoline/Gymnastics

    Power tumbling/trampoline clinics are being offered for boys and girls all shapes and sizes ages 3 and up. These clinics are an introduction to the great support of gymnastics, tumbling and trampoline. Basic tumbling and trampoline skills and safety techniques will be taught along with intro to gymnastics. Tumbling and trampoline is a great way to get exercise and also socialize with others your own age. MAT provides experienced instructors that are safety certified. These clinics are in conjunction with MAT Tumbling/Trampoline whose facility is located in the north end of the K-Mart Mall. No special equipment or clothes are needed, just come with a smile and ready for fun!

    MAT Tumbling/Trampoline/Baton is offering an introductory class in baton twirling. Beginning twirling basics will be taught along with baton tossing. This will be an exciting opportunity to experience baton twirling for both the beginner and novice level twirlers. If student attending has a baton, please bring it. Our instructor is former MHS twirler Ashley Worsfold. Ashley has 9 years of baton twirling experience.

    Swim Lessons

    Learn to Swim lessons will be offered in Marshalltown during the summer at the Aquatic Center (outdoor mornings only) and at the Marshalltown High School Pool (indoor evenings). Lessons run for 8 days (Monday-Thursday for 2 weeks) and are 45 minutes in length (Learn to Swim) and 30 minutes (Pre-school). Lessons will be held during cool temperatures and light rain. Cancellations will be announced on KFJB, KIX 101, KDAO and the Parks and Recreation cancellation line--641-754-5779. Please do not call our office for cancellations. Friday's will be used for make up dates if needed.

    2012 Blastball

    An action-packed alternative to traditional tee-ball. This program is for children ages 4 and 5 (must reach age 4 by 5/1/12). BLASTBALL gives every child a chance to learn the fundamentals of throwing, hitting and catching and they will have fun playing a fast-paced game. Teams are made up of 5-7 players so each child will have more opportunities to touch the ball. No special equipment is needed - everything is provided. BLASTBALL is offered either M-W or T-TH evenings at 6:00 or 6:45 p.m. from June 4-21. Each player will receive a team shirt. There are no practices beyond the 6 evenings of fun and play. Min 15/Max 20 for each session.
