MFD Responds to Sand Lake For Overturned Kayak

At 1412 hours on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 the Marshalltown Fire Department responded to Sand Lake (2901 Main Street Road) for a reported water rescue. The department responded within 3 minutes with 1 Engine, 1 Ladder, 1 Rescue Boat, and 2 Chief Officers. Upon arrival, Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputies directed fire department crews to a victim located on an island in the middle of Sand Lake. The victim stated he had entered Sand Lake at 1000 this morning with his kayak to do some fishing. During his time on the water, his kayak had capsized and the victim swam to the shore of the island. The victim also stated he had been stranded on the island for approximately 2 hours. The victim was wearing a personal floatation device and was uninjured; however he was exhibiting signs of mild hypothermia. The Marshalltown Fire Department deployed the rescue boat, and transported the victim to the shore. Unity Point-Marshalltown Paramedics, also at the scene, transported the patient to the emergency department for evaluation.
