Follow-up Press Release for The Villager Fire

Department: Fire Department
Date: 05/19/17

At 1123 PM on Friday, May 5th, 2017, the Marshalltown Fire Department was dispatched to 105 N. Center Avenue, The Villager Apartment Building for a working fire. Upon arrival, Fire Department personnel found heavy smoke conditions and advanced fire conditions on the first floor, quickly spreading to the upper floors and the roof. Multiple structural collapses occurred, including the South side exterior wall, the second/third floor, and the roof. The building has been structurally unstable since the night of the incident. Due to the condition of the building, Fire Department investigators and investigators from the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office were not able to enter the area of origin to determine the exact cause of the fire. Therefore, the cause of the Villager fire has been deemed undetermined and the case had been closed. As a result of the structural instability, the building was demolished to ensure the safety of the community. Arrangements are being made to remove the debris from the scene. North Center Street remains closed at the location of the incident until street repairs can be completed. Please contact Deputy Chief Christopher Cross with questions at 641-754-5751.
