MFD Responds to Residential Structure Fire

Department: Fire Department
Date: 01/26/17

At 12:14 P.M. on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, the Marshalltown Fire Department received a phone call on the administrative line from the occupant at 609 N 1st Avenue, Marshalltown, advising they thought their attic was on fire. The occupant saw a haze of smoke and smelled smoke as well. The Fire Department responded to the location. Fire crews found a slow and smoldering fire in the attic of the residence. Fire Department personnel gained access to the attic and extinguished the fire without incident. There were no injuries as a result of the incident; however, two families have been displaced. Fire victims will receive assistance from the Red Cross. Fire Department investigators determined the fire started as a result of an electrical short in the wiring located in the attic. The short ignited some blown-in cellulose insulation. Estimated fire damage is $15,000.
