Firefighters respond to Lagoon Fire at JBS Swift

Department: Fire Department
Date: 01/21/17

At 1030 Saturday, January 21, 2017, The Marshalltown Fire Department was dispatched for a working fire of the methane retention and collection system at JBS Swift, located at 402 N 10th AVE, MARSHALLTOWN. Upon arrival, fire crews discovered a large flammable gas fed fire at the methane collection lagoon. In conjunction with JBS staff, the plant was isolated from the collection system to prevent any gas exposure to the facility. Fire crews worked for approximately 3 hours to extinguish the membrane system using water from attack hose lines and elevated master streams. No injuries of civilians, JBS staff, or Fire Department Staff were reported. Representatives from the JBS Swift Engineering Department estimate the damage to the retention facility to be approximately $500,000. The plant is still in operation, no workers are displaced as a result of the incident. The fire’s exact cause is under investigation.
