MEGA-10 PARK – A NEW DESTINATION PARK FOR MARSHALLTOWN
Mega-10 Park is slated for a playground upgrade in 2017. It is located in the center of Marshalltown and is adjacent to the Family Aquatic Center, the Y, the softball complex and skate park as well as being positioned directly on the Linn Creek Recreational Trail. The upgraded and new playground equipment being planned will have a train theme in keeping with Marshalltown’s long association with the railroad industry. New equipment will include a seated zipline (the first in the area), new accessible playground equipment and a children’s fitness area.
In addition, a Children’s Discovery Garden is being planned with activities for children, plants in various areas emphasizing our five senses, a reading nook and little library, and picket fences and bird houses painted by children. A train themed garden is also planned for around the caboose located at the park. The Woodbury school will be helping us with a “Paint the Pickets Day” at their school. We have 490 pickets to paint so are looking forward to children painting individual pickets that will be placed around the garden.
With these additions Mega 10 Park has the opportunity to be a “Showplace” and “Destination Park” for Marshalltown. We hope to engage local and out of town visitors to make Marshalltown a place to spend time biking, hiking, using the skate park, playing on the new state of the art playground equipment, discovering enchanting gardens and swimming at the aquatic center and the Y.
The Iowa Valley Leadership class of 2017 has chosen this project for their class project. The 28 class participants will be raising funds, marketing, and helping plan and install the children’s garden. A Trivia Night is currently planned for Feb. 28 at the Fisher Community Center and a Party for the Park at HyVee is in the works. In addition, garden pickets are being sold for $100. These pickets will have your name on them and will go around the Children’s Discovery Garden.
We welcome donations for this exciting new endeavor for the children and families of Marshalltown and the surrounding area!
