Parks and Recreation Mission: To develop and promote recreational opportunities and to maintain and preserve parklands and facilities for the community.
The Parks and Recreation Department's purpose is to provide leisure time opportunities that are affordable to all area residents. The area served reaches beyond the city limits and includes most of Marshall County. There is a Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee appointed by the Mayor that meets monthly. Applications for appointment to this board are found on the website under Resources/City Clerk/Board-Commission Applications.
The Recreation Department provides a wide variety of recreational activities with online registration available for various youth activities (such as winter indoor soccer, volleyball, basketball, tiny tot sports, summer art classes, golf and tennis lessons, swim lessons, tumbling, and various summer day camps and sport camps; and winter swimming lessons and Camp Marshalltown, a special needs day program, and Summer & Winter Blast Day Camp, and Bobcat Special Olympics are also offered); and adult activities (organized leagues such as slowpitch, kickball, volleyball, flag football and basketball leagues) along with Zumba, Taekwondo, Pickleball open gym, Tai Chi for Arthritis & Improved Mobility, Fun with Fiber classes, Urban Bow Hunting and more. This department oversees park shelter rental facilities, the Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Marshalltown Family Aquatic Center where during the summer months various activities are offered such as Splash Dances for youth entering grades 5-9, Adult Tot Swim, and Adult Water Walking and Lap Swimming. Online registration is available for many of these various activities.
The Parks Division is responsible for maintenance of all parks, skatepark, and rental buildings, softball complex, playgrounds, campground, the Marshalltown Family Aquatic Center, bike trail, tennis courts, disc golf course; dog park and Veterans Memorial Coliseum. This department also oversees the renting of programs. This department is also responsible for inspection and removal of terrace trees; Riverview Park Campground; flower bed Adopt-A-Bed program; and maintenance of the levee system. During winter months they are responsible for snow removal on city sidewalk areas and bridges. During the spring-fall months they mow city-lawns and perform litter removal in various areas of the city.
